Plans are underway to give a major upgrade to one of the primary routes into and out of Cairo. The highway 51 bridge to Wickliffe, KY was deemed "functionally obsolete" because it no longer meets today's traffic standards. The bridge is nearly 80 years old and not in great shape. With a width of only about 20 feet and carrying a substantial amount of heavy trucking activity, developers have determined that it is time to look for options to upgrade the bridge.
This past Monday, developers met with community members in Cairo to discuss what needs to be addressed with the bridge to upgrade. In conjunction with the state of Kentucky, planning will continue to agree on the best course of action. Construction may take as long as 10 years to complete, but the process is underway.
